The Big Picture
All three clouds are mature, reliable, and capable of running any workload. The differences that matter for startups are pricing at low scale, developer experience, managed service quality, and where you can get credits.
AWS
The market leader with the broadest service catalogue. If a managed service exists, AWS probably has it. The downside is pricing complexity — dozens of pricing dimensions per service — and a console UI that can feel overwhelming. AWS Activate provides up to $100K in credits for qualifying startups.
Best for: Teams with AWS experience, applications needing niche managed services, or startups planning to eventually sell to enterprise customers (who often standardise on AWS).
Google Cloud (GCP)
GCP's standout is BigQuery for analytics and Kubernetes (GCP invented it). Developer tooling is excellent and pricing is generally more predictable. Google for Startups Cloud Program provides up to $200K in credits over two years.
Best for: Data-heavy applications, ML workloads (TPUs, Vertex AI), or teams already using Google Workspace.
Azure
The default choice if you are building Microsoft-adjacent technology — .NET, Active Directory, Office 365 integration. Enterprise sales are easier when your prospect already uses Azure. Azure for Startups provides up to $150K in credits.
Best for: Enterprise-focused SaaS, Microsoft stack (.NET), or teams selling into regulated industries already on Azure.
Our Recommendation for Most Startups
Start with AWS or GCP. AWS if you want maximum service availability; GCP if you have data/ML requirements. Avoid over-engineering multi-cloud from day one — master one provider first.
